Gordon Behrents Senior Center in Galesburg has announced that Georgene Erickson of Galesburg is the Senior of the Month. At the young age of 99, Georgene stays busy with jewelry making, playing golf and sewing. A few times a week she comes to Gordon Behrents to have a home cooked meal, connect with friends and enjoy fun activities.
Georgene was born in rural Rio and raised in Avon. As an only child, she was her Dad’s main farm hand helping take care of chickens, cows, planting and more. She used to bottle the milk from the cows and help deliver the milk to houses in town. As she got older she started working in different jewelry stores around Galesburg, the main one being O’Dell’s.
In 1946, Georgene married her loving husband Clarence and they stayed busy raising their son. She continued to help her father on the farm. When Clarence moved into the Knox County Nursing Home, she saw a need and quickly got to work. For more than 13 years Georgene volunteered daily running social activities, organizing and running the gift shop.
In 2022, Georgene’s friend told her about Gordon Behrents and she started attending a few days a week. She loves the games and social interaction the most. “She always has a great attitude. I love seeing all of her jewelry and sewing creations she makes. Georgene is talented!” shares Teresa, Gordon Behrents staff member.
